OneNote is Not The Same as OneNote
Last Updated 2023-10-27
This is a short post, and may be updated as time goes on, but just because we are all on OneNote and OneNote is available on all major platforms does not mean there is feature parity. Sure, most things are there, and from what I've seen there's read-only support for everything, however I've noticed these differences:
- There's several different, or at at least were several different versions of OneNote for Windows. As of 2023, it seems the only currently supported version is OneNote that comes with Office 365, which matches the OneNote "desktop" version from OneNote 2016 as opposed to the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) "OneNote for Windows 10". Features were not the same, and the gold-standard of the OneNote experience was the "desktop" or Office 365 Windows version. This remains true and is a basis over all subsequent issues.
- OneNote for macOS and OneNote on the Web do not allow for embedding of editable Excel sheets. Back in 2018, when people asked about this, the response was it was an operating system restriction referencing the macOS version. There may be some truth, however that limitation is carried over to the web version as well.
- OneNote on the Web seems to include "Stickers". I assume these show up as images for others.
